The Year 8 girls class as keepers of the penguin designed the overall concept, which other students helped to paint. The backgrounds of the cloak and boardshorts are painted in the style of Chuck Close. Native flora and fauna and Kowhaiwhai patterns decorate the cloak. Symbols and icons of New Zealand adorn the board shorts. Noot’s wings show Te Ikaroa and Te Waka-o-Maui – the North and South Islands. His chest represents the Matariki star formation, while his feet are the Pacific ocean and Tasman Sea. Noot’s neck is Rangi, the sky and his beak is Aotearoa, The Long White Cloud. Our flags are reflected in his eyes.
