Harcourts Design Competition Winner
In April 2020, Harcourts challenged the children of Canterbury to send in designs for a little penguin. The winner of the competition would have their design painted onto a little penguin sculpture to be displayed during the Pop Up Penguins trail. At the auction in February 2021, Harcourts will present the winner with their penguin to keep forever!
Lots of children sent in designs and a Harcourts panel judged them all, then selected this design as the winner. Jim Davis, South Island Regional Manager for Harcourts, surprised the winner by announcing she had won the competition at a school assembly.
The Rosie Hoiho penguin was designed by Jasmine Smith and her design was inspired by a garden of roses. The paint has been layered to show depth on the flowers set on a vibrant green background. The heart of the penguin symbolises New Zealand and the care we need to show our environment. The vines show how we are all connected.
Artist, Justine Ottey worked with Jasmine to paint the design onto the penguin sculpture.
