In August, former New Zealand Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh’s graphic memoir Mophead: How Your Difference Makes a Difference was awarded the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year in the 2020 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Mophead is a glorious account of Selina’s “hair acceptance”, from her 10-year-old-self hiding her unique tresses in order to fit in, to her moment of revelation where she discovers it’s much better to embrace her difference, to be WILD! Once she understood that it was her difference that would make a difference in the world, her journey became really exciting! From meeting the Queen to becoming NZ Poet Laureate, Selina’s story encourages us all to celebrate what makes us different and bring our true selves to the world.
