Design Inspiration

The ‘Kiwiama’ penguin is draped in a Feather Cloak, Kahu Huruhuru, for warmth and protection, the colour red symbolising power, sacredness and prestige. The triangular pattern, Aronui, of the Taniko border on the shoulder of the cloak refers to the pursuit of knowledge about the natural world. This modern-day cloak was constructed from galvanised steel to show the level of protection we now place the hoiho under. ‘Kiwiama’ is a play on words referring to the kiwi, our most protected bird, and to historical steel armour.
