1. Sumner Beach ★★★★★
The best beach in Sumner is the most perfect experience for beach goers as it has a 400 metre beach surrounded by cafes and shops, volcanoes, and the Pacific Ocean. Its major attraction point is the Cave Rock (also known as Tuawera in te reo Māori). This cave rock is formed from lava deposits which one can enter at low tide or climb to see beautiful sights around the bay. There are lifeguards on duty here every Saturday during summer months of November to March.
Pro tip: Before going down to the beach, you may want to drive up Scarborough Hill to get a great view of the bay.

2. New Brighton Beach ★★★★★
It is an open-air and adventurous area that has an 18-kilometer-long coastline of the Pacific Ocean that has a 300-meter-long pier, sand dunes, and beachside neighborhoods that have made a name for themselves through their prosperity. Enjoy strolls along the pier that will let you see the view of the Pacific Ocean and mountains of Kaikōura on clear days. Just adjacent to the pier is located “He Puna Taimoana,” which includes five heated saltwater pools, a plunging pool, sauna, and steam room with an excellent view of the ocean.
Tip: Try reserving space at “He Puna Taimoana” as soon as possible.

3. Taylors Mistake ★★★★☆
Drive around Scarborough, and you will be greeted by one of the most impressive beaches in Canterbury — the black sands, rugged cliffs, and pounding waves. It is ideal for advanced surfers only. The non-surfers can enjoy the Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Walk, an incredible 9 km trek along the coastline where one can find WWII military bunkers.
