Josh graduated from the University of Canterbury school of Fine Arts with First Class Honours in 2011 where he received awards including the Sawtell-Turner Prize in Painting and the winner of the graduate and postgraduate award Select 2011.
Since then he has maintained a practice in Christchurch showing in a number of group shows. He received the 2015 Wrightmann Travelling Residency and has been integral in establishing the Stoked exhibition series that run each March in New Brighton.
Josh’s work will also be showcased throughout the soon to open Muse Hotel in Christchurch’s central city.
His practice focuses on the layering and disruption of paint edges and surfaces. Informed by the films, photographs, ephemera, and designs from surf, beach and car culture of the post-war era, these motifs are used as a departure point to explore formal properties of art-making through painting.
Josh created the Reti ngaru (Surf’s up) penguin.
